Servo Micro Metering Pump

The SMMP100 is a servo micro metering pump designed specifically for μL-level precision fluid delivery. It is another masterpiece in Hilin Technology’s precision fluid control product line. It innovatively adopts a PTFE plunger + diaphragm primary sealing structure, combined with FOC (Field-Oriented Control) and high-precision position sensors for high-precision position servo control of the motor, as well as integrated check valves. Within a single-dose delivery range of 10–100 μL, it achieves ±1% metering repeatability while offering an ultra-long service life of over 100 million cycles.

It retains the high precision and linear controllability of traditional plunger pumps while resolving their pain points of wear-induced leakage and frequent maintenance, providing a long-life, maintenance-free, and highly reliable micro fluid delivery solution for in vitro diagnostics, biopharmaceuticals, semiconductor manufacturing, precision chemicals, and other fields.

Core Technical Highlights

Diaphragm Primary Seal: A Shift from “Wear” to “Fatigue”

Traditional precision plunger pumps rely on micron-level precision fit between the piston and cylinder to achieve dynamic sealing. Wear is inevitable, precision continuously degrades with use over time, and ultimately failure occurs due to leakage. The SMMP100 adopts a diaphragm primary sealing structure — the PTFE piston is only responsible for pushing the liquid, while sealing is borne by the rear diaphragm. A relatively large clearance is maintained between the piston and cylinder, making it a non-contact guide with virtually no wear.

  • Lifelong Stable Precision: No seal wear, metering accuracy does not drift with use over time
  • Theoretical Lifespan Exceeding 100 Million Strokes: Core wear is concentrated only in the diaphragm, and with long-life diaphragm materials, the lifespan far exceeds that of traditional plunger pumps
  • Maintenance-Free Operation: No need for regular replacement of expensive piston seals, significantly reducing long-term usage costs

FOC Field-Oriented Control + High-Precision Position Sensor: Precision Has Never Been So Quiet

The SMMP100 is equipped with FOC field-oriented control combined with a high-precision position sensor to perform high-precision position servo control of the motor, monitoring and correcting the piston position in real time.

  • Elimination of Position Deviation: Closed-loop position servo control fundamentally eliminates the precision inaccuracy caused by step loss that may occur with open-loop drive
  • ±1% Repeatability: Within the 10–100 μL range, the single-dose delivery volume is precisely controllable, meeting demanding micro metering requirements
  • Quiet Operation: FOC drive suppresses low-frequency resonance, with operating noise <40 dB, suitable for noise-sensitive environments such as laboratories and medical equipment
  • Integrated Drive and Control for Ease of Use: The motor and drive controller are designed as an integrated unit, requiring no external drive or programming. Simply with simple commands, the stroke volume (10–100 μL) and operating speed (up to 1 Hz) can be flexibly set, making use and integration extremely simple.

Integrated Check Valve + Large-Clearance Piston: No Fear of Complex Media

The SMMP100 pump head features built-in corrosion-resistant check valves, eliminating the need for external valve components, simplifying the system tubing as well as greatly simplifying the circuit and control system. Combined with a large-clearance piston design, it has a natural tolerance for fine particles in fluids and is not prone to clogging, making it suitable for complex media such as particle-containing suspensions and easily crystallizing liquids, with broad viscosity adaptability.

Zero External Leakage + Broad Chemical Compatibility: Safe Handling of Harsh Media

The diaphragm completely isolates the delivered liquid from the drive mechanism. The flow path has no dynamic seals, achieving zero external leakage, making it suitable for toxic, flammable, and highly corrosive liquids. Multiple options of corrosion-resistant engineering plastics, metals, and elastomer materials are available, compatible with media such as organic solvents, acids, and bases. The low dead volume design reduces liquid residue and minimizes waste of high-value reagents.

Competitive Comparison Analysis

Comparison with Conventional Stepper Motor Plunger Pumps

Conventional stepper motor plunger pumps are the most common solution in the field of micro fluid delivery. Their core principle is that a stepper motor drives a lead screw to push a piston, and the piston achieves sealing through precision fit with the cylinder. Products of this type can achieve relatively high precision, but they have several fundamental limitations.

First, the lifespan bottleneck cannot be overcome. The precision fit surface between the piston and cylinder is a dynamic sealing pair. As operating time increases, wear inevitably leads to enlarged clearance and increased internal leakage, and metering accuracy continuously degrades accordingly. Users are forced to regularly replace piston seals, resulting in high maintenance frequency and substantial long-term costs. The SMMP100 liberates the piston from the sealing function through a diaphragm primary seal. A relatively large clearance is maintained between the piston and cylinder, resulting in virtually no wear, lifelong stable precision, and a theoretical lifespan exceeding 100 million strokes, fundamentally eliminating this bottleneck.

Second, it is highly sensitive to particles in fluids. The piston-cylinder fit clearance of precision plunger pumps is typically in the micron range. Once the fluid contains fine particles, at best the fit surface is scratched and wear is accelerated, and at worst the pump directly jams. The SMMP100’s large-clearance piston design has a natural tolerance for particles and is not prone to failure due to particles.

Third, open-loop drive carries the risk of step loss. Many conventional stepper motor plunger pumps use open-loop control. Under load fluctuations or high-speed operation, step loss may occur, causing metering deviation that the system cannot detect. The SMMP100 adopts FOC field-oriented control combined with a high-precision position sensor for closed-loop position servo control, monitoring and correcting the piston position in real time, fundamentally eliminating position deviation.

Fourth, the degree of control and integration is insufficient. An external stepper motor driver is required, and zero-point setting and pulse programming are needed to achieve quantitative operation. The SMMP100 achieves integrated drive and control with automatic zeroing. Simply by setting a simple 10–100 μL stroke ratio, quantitative operation can be performed very easily, without any external PLC or driver.

Comparison with Electromagnetic Diaphragm Micro Pumps (Imported Products from Japan and the United States)

Electromagnetic diaphragm micro pumps are relatively common among imported products from Japan and the United States. They use electromagnetic coils to drive diaphragms in reciprocating motion, featuring a simple structure and relatively low cost, and are widely used in the analytical instrument field. However, their technical characteristics have several inherent limitations.

Limited precision and adjustment range. Most electromagnetic diaphragm micro pumps imported from Japan and the United States cannot adjust the single-dispense range and can only adjust the dispensed volume through multiple runs. Repeatability in the low-range segment is approximately CV 2%–5%. The SMMP100 has an adjustable single-dose delivery range of 10–100 μL and repeatability of ±1%, with both precision and adjustment range significantly superior to electromagnetic solutions.

Contradiction between operating frequency and precision retention capability. Some imported electromagnetic diaphragm micro pumps have a nominal maximum operating frequency of approximately 2 Hz, but their high-precision operation usually depends on a fixed on/off time ratio, stroke interval adjustment flexibility is limited, and precision tends to further degrade at high frequencies. The SMMP100 maintains ±1% repeatability during continuous operation at up to 1 Hz, and the stroke interval can be adjusted online, flexibly adapting to both continuous delivery and intermittent dispensing conditions.

Significantly high power consumption. The power consumption of some imported electromagnetic diaphragm micro pumps from Japan and the United States is commonly 4.4 W to 15 W. The SMMP100 has a rated power of <1.5 W, greatly reducing power consumption under equivalent micro delivery capability, making it suitable for portable or high-density integrated equipment with strict requirements for energy consumption and heat dissipation.

Limited lifespan. The typical continuous operating lifespan of comparable electromagnetically driven micro pumps is approximately 20 million cycles. The SMMP100 has a theoretical lifespan exceeding 100 million strokes, more than 5 times that of electromagnetic solutions.

Precision cannot be compensated, and errors are uncontrollable. The dispensed volume of an electromagnetic diaphragm pump is jointly determined by coil energization time, spring force, and diaphragm deformation. Once the diaphragm ages or fluid viscosity changes, the dispensed volume will drift, and the system cannot perceive or compensate for it. The SMMP100’s FOC position servo system can perceive the actual piston position in real time and compensate for diaphragm elastic deformation and micro internal leakage through algorithms, ensuring long-term precision stability.
